Exports

On a month-on-month basis, in October 2019, the export unit value index dropped marginally by 0.1% to 116.2 points which was mainly attributed to the decrease in the index of mineral fuels (-1.3%), inedible crude materials (-0.5%) and manufactured goods (-0.2%). In contrast, the export volume index recorded a rise of 16.7% to 146.6 points. The rise was led by the increase in the index of machinery & transport equipment (+23.9%), mineral fuels (+15.5%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+12.2%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index expanded 13.4% to 140.9 points

When compared to the previous year, both export unit value and volume indices declined 0.1% and 6.6% respectively.

 

Imports

In October 2019, the import unit value index declined 0.3% to 117.1 points when compared to the previous month, which was due to the drop in the index of inedible crude materials (-0.6%) followed by machinery & transport equipment (-0.3%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-0.3%). Meanwhile, the import volume index increased 5.9% to 142.2 points. The increase was mainly contributed by the growth in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (+59.1%), manufactured goods (+22.6%) and machinery & transport equipment (+6.2%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in October 2019 registered a growth of 3.9% to 137.2 points.

On a year-on-year basis, both import unit value and volume indices shrank 3.0% and 5.9% respectively.



Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade grew 0.2% to 99.2 points when compared with September 2019. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade also registered a rise of 3.0% from 96.3 points.
