Exports

On a month-on-month basis, in August 2019, the export unit value index recorded a marginal decline of 0.1% to 115.3 points which was mainly attributed to the decrease in the index of manufactured goods (-0.8%), inedible crude materials (-0.5%) and chemicals (-0.2%). Meanwhile, the export volume index also recorded the same trend with a drop of 7.5% to 132.6 points. The drop was led by the decrease in the index of machinery & transport equipment (-16.0%), mineral fuels (-10.5%) and inedible crude materials (-8.1%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 10.6% to 128.3 points.

When compared to the previous year, both the export unit value and volume indices declined 0.1% and 0.6% respectively.

 

Imports

In August 2019, the import unit value index fell 0.1% to 117.5 points when compared to the previous month, which was mainly led by a decline in the index of mineral fuels (-1.4%) followed by inedible crude materials (-0.9%) and manufactured goods (-0.2%). The import volume index also decreased 4.4% to 136.2 points. The decrease was mainly attributed to the decline in the index of mineral fuels (-19.7%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (-16.1%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-2.6%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in August 2019 decreased 4.6% to 132.0 points.

On a year-on-year basis, both the import unit value and volume indices shrank 1.1% and 11.6% respectively.

 

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade grew 0.02% to 98.1 points when compared with July 2019. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade also registered a rise of 1.0% from 97.1 points.
