Exports

On a month-on-month basis, in April 2019, the export unit value index recorded a decline of 0.1% to 114.8 points which was mainly attributed to the decrease in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (-3.6%), inedible crude materials (-0.4%) and mineral fuels (-0.3%). In contrast, the export volume index grew 1.5% to 139.5 points. This was led by the increase in the index of machinery & transport equipment (+3.5%), manufactured goods (+3.4%) and mineral fuels (+2.4%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index rose 10.0% to 142.9 points.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index expanded 2.1% while the export volume index declined 1.0%.

 

Imports

In April 2019, the import unit value index grew 1.2% to 118.2 points when compared to the previous month, which was mainly led by the rise in the index of mineral fuels (+7.0%) followed by inedible crude materials (+2.0%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.3%). Meanwhile, the import volume index also increased 5.5% to 143.0 points which was mainly contributed by the increase in the index of inedible crude materials (+12.3%), mineral fuels (+11.9%) and manufactured goods (+11.5%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in April 2019 rose 10.7% to 149.6 points.

On a year-on-year basis, the import unit value and volume index rose 2.3% and 2.1% respectively.

 

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade dropped 1.2% to 97.1 points when compared with March 2019. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade also registered a decline of 0.2% from 97.3 points.
