Exports

On a month-on-month basis, in September 2019, the export unit value index recorded an expansion of 0.9% to 116.3 points which was mainly contributed by the increase in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (+6.4%), mineral fuels (+2.1%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.2%). In contrast, the export volume index dropped 5.3% to 125.6 points. The drop was led by the decline in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (-18.9%), manufactured goods (-13.0%) and mineral fuels (-5.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 3.2% to 124.2 points.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index rose 0.2% while the export volume index declined 7.0%.

 

Imports

In September 2019, the import unit value index recorded a marginal decrease of 0.1% to 117.4 points when compared to the previous month, which was due to the decline in the index of mineral fuels (-2.6%) followed by inedible crude materials (-1.0%) and manufactured goods (-0.1%). Meanwhile, the import volume index decreased 1.4% to 134.3 points. The decrease was mainly attributed to the decline in the index of chemicals (-11.5%), food (-9.8%) and machinery & transport equipment (-3.5%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in September 2019 increased marginally by 0.01% to 132.1 points.

On a year-on-year basis, the import unit value index shrank 2.3% while the import volume index increased 4.8%.



Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade grew 0.9% to 99.0 points when compared with August 2019. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade also registered a rise of 2.6% from 96.5 points.
