Exports

On a month-on-month basis, in May 2019, the export unit value index recorded an increase of 0.4% to 115.3 points which was mainly attributed to the increase in the index of inedible crude material (+1.0%), mineral fuels (+0.7%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.6%). In contrast, the export volume index dropped 1.6% to 137.2 points. This was led by the decrease in the index of machinery & transport equipment (-8.9%), inedible crude materials (-8.3%) and mineral fuels (-2.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 3.1% to 138.4 points.

 

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and  export volume index expanded 1.7%  and 0.8% respectively.

 

Imports

In May 2019, the import unit value index grew 0.6% to 118.9 points when compared to previous month. This was mainly contributed by the increase in the index of mineral fuels (+2.1%), inedible crude materials (+1.4%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.4%). The import volume index also increased 0.4% to 143.5 points which was mainly led by a rise in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (+34.9%) followed by chemicals (+5.6%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+2.3%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in May 2019 decreased 5.9% to 140.8 points.

 

On a year-on-year basis, the import unit value grew 1.8% and volume index decreased 0.2%.

 

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade dropped 0.2% to 96.9 points when compared with April 2019. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade also registered a decline of 0.1% from 97.0 points.
