SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE RECORDED RM112.5 BILLION

IN JULY 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade in July 2019 amounted to RM112.5 billion, grew  5.7 per cent as compared to the same month a year ago. The growth was attributed by Wholesale Trade which recorded an increase of  RM3.2 billion (+6.6%) followed by Retail Trade with RM3.1 billion (+7.1%). Meanwhile, Motor Vehicles decreased RM0.3 billion (-1.7%).

Volume index for Wholesale & Retail Trade posted a growth of  6.3 per cent to  132.9 points as compared to the same month of the previous year. This growth was driven by Retail Trade with 8.4 per cent. As for seasonally  adjusted volume index, it increased  1.1 per cent as against a month ago.

For performance across sub-sector, Retail Trade sub-sector was the main contributor with year on year growth of  7.1 per cent. Within the same period, Wholesale Trade rose  6.6 per cent. Contrarily, Motor Vehicles contracted  1.7 per cent.

The growth of  6.3 per cent in the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade was propelled by Retail Trade  (8.4%) and followed by Wholesale Trade  (5.8%). Motor Vehicles grew at a slower pace to  0.3 per cent within the same period. 

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated a sales value of RM52.4 billion in July 2019, increased RM3.2 billion (6.6%) as against the corresponding month of the previous year. The expansion was supported by Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (9.0%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (7.2%) and Other Specialised Wholesale (7.0%). For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector contracted  2.3 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade expanded  5.8 per cent to  126.5 points in July 2019 as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Wholesale of  Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals recorded a growth of  10.8 per cent. This was followed by Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.3%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (7.1%). Seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector  rose  1.1 per cent as against a month ago.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered an annual growth of  7.1 per cent as compared to July 2018. The expansion was driven by Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (10.5%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (8.2%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.1%).

In terms of volume index, Retail Trade rose  8.4 per cent to  146.5 points in July 2019.   Retail Sale in Non-Specialised Stores posted a growth of  10.7 per cent. This was followed by Retail Sale of  Food, Beverages & Tobacco (9.9%) and Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel (9.1%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose marginally  0.8 per cent as against June 2019.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles declined  1.7 per cent as against the corresponding month of the previous year. This was due to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a negative growth of  5.8 per cent. Compared to a month ago,  sales  value  elevated  to 7.3 per cent after recording a fall of  5.4 per cent in June 2019.

As for volume index, it  increased  0.3 per cent to  114.5 points compared to a year ago. The marginal increment  was due to Sales of Motor Vehicles which  recorded a negative growth of  5.0 per cent in July 2019. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index expanded 4.8 per cent.
