SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE RECORDED RM105.1 BILLION
IN APRIL 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade in April 2019 amounted to RM105.1 billion, grew  5.3 per cent as compared to the same month  a  year  ago. Wholesale  Trade recorded  RM51.2 billion,  followed  by  Retail Trade  (RM41.6 billion)  and  Motor  Vehicles  (RM12.3 billion). However, on monthly comparison, sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade decreased  4.0 per cent after registering an increase of  5.8 per cent in March 2019.

Volume  index  for Wholesale  &  Retail Trade  rose  4.9 per cent  to  167.5 points as compared to  the  same  month of the  previous year. As  for  seasonally  adjusted volume index, it increased  1.2 per cent as against a month ago. This growth was  driven by Motor Vehicles with  6.7 per cent.

For  performance   across  sub-sector,  Retail  Trade  sub-sector  remained  as  the  main  driver  with  year-on-year   growth  of   6.3  per cent.  Within the  same  period,  Wholesale Trade rose  5.3  per cent,  while  Motor  Vehicles increased  2.2  per  cent. Compared to  the  previous  month,  sales  value  for  all    sub-sectors recorded negative growth.

The growth of  4.9 per cent in the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade was propelled by  Retail Trade which expanded  6.9 per cent. Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade also posted an increase of  3.5 per cent and  3.3 per cent respectively.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated a sales value of  RM51.2 billion in  April 2019,  increased  5.3 per cent as against  the corresponding month  of  the  previous  year. The  expansion  was  supported  by Other  Specialised  Wholesale  which  grew   6.6  per cent.  The   next   contributors   were   Wholesale on a  Fee  or Contract   Basis    and    Wholesale  of   Food,   Beverages  &  Tobacco  with   5.6  per  cent   growth  respectively.  For  monthly  comparison,  sales  of  this  sub-sector   contracted   3.8 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade rose   3.3 per cent to  177.0 points in April 2019 as compared to the  same  month of  the preceding year.  Wholesale of Food,  Beverages  &  Tobacco  surpassed  other  wholesale  industries  with   7.8 per cent  growth.   This   was   followed   by   Wholesale   of   Household  Goods   (6.3%)   and  Non-Specialised Wholesale Trade (5.8%). Seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector increased   0.7 per cent as  against  a  month ago.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered  annual  growth of   6.3 per cent as  compared to April 2018. The  expansion  was  spurred  by Retail  Sale  of  Food,  Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores  (8.8%), Retail Sale via Stalls & Markets  (8.2%), and Retail Sale of Cultural &  Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores  (7.2%).

In terms of volume index,  Retail Trade rose  6.9 per cent to  174.0 points in  April 2019. Retail Sale  of  Information & Communications Equipment  in  Specialised  Stores  and  Retail  Sale  via  Stalls  &  Markets  posted  a  double-digit  growth  of   11.7 per cent   and   10.3 per cent  respectively. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it edged up  0.2 per cent as against March 2019.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor  Vehicles  increased  2.2 per cent as against the corresponding  month of the previous year. This was  attributed  by  Sales,  Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles  (4.3%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles  (4.1%) and Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories  (3.8%).

As for volume index, it expanded  3.5 per cent to  126.0 points compared to a year ago. Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts &  Accessories  and  Sales, Maintenance & Repair of  Motorcycles  contributed the most with  6.7 per cent and  5.7 per cent of each. For  monthly comparison,  the seasonally  adjusted volume index recorded a growth of  6.7 per cent.
