SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE RECORDED RM112.3 BILLION

IN JUNE 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales  of  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  in  June  2019  amounted  to  RM112.3 billion, grew   5.9 per cent  as  compared to   the  same  month  a  year  ago.  The increase was attributed by Retail  Trade  which recorded  RM3.3 billion (+7.7%)  followed by Wholesale Trade RM3.2 billion (+6.4%). Meanwhile, Motor Vehicles decreased  RM0.3 billion (-2.5%).

For performance across sub-sector, Retail Trade sub-sector was the main driver with year on year growth  of  7.7 per cent.  Within   the   same   period, Wholesale   Trade   rose   6.4 per cent   and   Motor   Vehicles   dropped   2.5 per cent.

Volume index for Wholesale & Retail Trade posted a growth of  6.4 per cent to 133.7 points as compared to the same month of the previous year. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it remained 2.2 per cent as against a month ago. This growth was driven by Retail Trade with 4.1 per cent.

The growth of  6.4 per cent in the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade was propelled by Retail Trade ( 9.6%) and   Wholesale   Trade  (5.0%).   However, Motor   Vehicles  recorded  a   negative  growth  of   0.1 per cent  within  the  same  period.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade  generated  a  sales  value  of  RM53.6 billion in June 2019, expanded  RM 3.2 billion  (6.4%)  as  against the corresponding month of the previous year. The expansion was supported by Wholesale of Agricultural,  Raw Materials  &  Live   Animals   (8.3%),   Other   Specialised   Wholesale  (7.4%), and   Wholesale  of   Food,  Beverages  &  Tobacco  (6.7%).   For   monthly   comparison,  sales   of   this   sub-sector   contracted   0.6 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade expanded 5.0 per cent to 129.8 points in June 2019 as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Wholesale of  Agricultural  Raw  Materials  and  Live  Animals   surpassed  other  industries  recorded  a  growth  10.1 per cent. This  was  followed  by  Wholesale  of  Food,  Beverages  and  Tobacco   (8.2%)  and   Wholesale   of  Household  Goods  (6.9%). Seasonally  adjusted  volume index of this sub-sector rose 1.9 per cent as against a month ago.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered annual growth of 7.7 per cent as compared to June 2018. The expansion was driven by  Retail  Sale  of   Food,  Beverages   & Tobacco  in   Specialised  Stores   (9.2%),  Retail   Sale   of   Other  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores   (9.1%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.8%).

In terms of volume index, Retail Trade rose  9.6 per cent to 146.7 points in June 2019.  Retail Sale in Non-Spesialised Stores posted a growth 12.8 per cent. This was followed by Retail Sale of  Automotive Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  (9.6%).  As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it elevated 4.1 per cent as against May 2019.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles declined  2.5 per cent as against the corresponding month of the previous year. This was attributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a negative growth of  8.6 per cent. Compared to a month ago, sales value decreased  5.4 per cent after recording a positive growth of  8.8 per cent in May 2019.

As for volume index, it decreased  0.1 per cent to 108.8 points compared to a year ago. The decline was due to decrease in sales value of motor vehicle of   7.5 per cent in June 2019. For monthly comparison, the seasonally adjusted volume index contracted  4.3 per cent.
