Overview

In the first quarter of 2019, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade continued to expand by recording a growth of  6.4 per cent to 173.6 points as compared to the same period in 2018. Retail Trade was the key performer by registering  9.3 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased 0.1 per cent as against the fourth quarter of 2018. Retail  Trade   and   Wholesale  Trade   recorded   negative  growth  of  0.6 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively, while  Motor  Vehicles  increased 2.5 per cent.

Table 1: Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade  by Sub-sector

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

Volume index of Wholesale Trade grew 4.3 per cent to 179.7 points in the first quarter 2019 as compared to first quarter 2018. The growth was supported mainly by Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials and Live Animals  (11.1%), Wholesale of Household Goods (7.6%) and Wholesale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco  (7.0%).

Retail Trade Sub-sector

In first quarter 2019, Retail Trade sub-sector registered a growth of  9.3 per cent to 185.0 points year-on-year. The growth was attributed by Retail Sale of Information and Communications Equipment in Specialised Stores  (12.9%). This was followed by Retail Sale of  Other  Goods in Specialised Stores  and  Retail  Sale  of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised   Stores    which  expanded 10.9 per cent respectively.

Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume index of Motor Vehicles posted an increase of  4.3 per cent to 128.5 points in the first quarter 2019 as against the same period in 2018. The increase was driven by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles & Related Parts & Accessories  (7.9%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories  (6.6%).
