Overview

In the third quarter of 2019, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade expanded  6.0 per cent to 132.0 points as compared to the same period in 2018. Retail Trade was the key performer by registering  7.8 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 2.9 per cent as against the second quarter of 2019. Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 3.6 per cent and 3.3 per cent respectively. Meanwhile, Motor Vehicles contracted   1.1 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

Volume index of Wholesale Trade grew 5.4 per cent to 131.5 points in the third quarter 2019 as compared to third quarter 2018. The growth was supported mainly by Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals ( 7.1%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (6.9%).

Retail Trade Sub-sector

In third quarter 2019, Retail Trade sub-sector registered a growth of  7.8 per cent to 141.2 points year on year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.8%)  and  Retail Sale of Food,  Beverages &  Tobacco in Specialised Stores   (8.7%).  

Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume index of Motor Vehicles rose 1.9 per cent to 107.7 points in the third quarter 2019 as against the same period in 2018. The increase was fueled by Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which expanded 4.6 per cent respectively.
