Overview

1. PRODUCTION

In January 2016, the total production of natural rubber (NR) was registered at 75,132 tonnes, increased by 1,548 tonnes (+2.1%) when compared to a month ago. Comparison to January 2015 showed a decrease of 6,622 tonnes (-8.1%).  Production of NR by the smallholdings sector contributes 92.1 per cent whilst the remaining is from the estate sector. Month-on-month, smallholding sector recorded an increase at 2.4 per cent while estate sector a decrease 1.7 per cent.


2. EXPORTS

A total of 51,503 tonnes of NR was exported in January 2016. Total exports of NR dropped by 2,651 tonnes (-4.9%) from a month ago and 17,962 tonnes (-25.9%) from a year ago. Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R.) contributes 94.9 per cent from the total exports where 62.4 per cent is S.M.R. 20.

The main destination for exports of NR were the People’s Rep. of China (41.4%), followed by Germany (13.8%), Islamic Rep. of Iran (5.3%), U.S.A. (5.2%), Finland (4.3%), Turkey (3.9%), Brazil (3.0%), Taiwan (1.7%) and Portugal (1.2%).

 

3. IMPORTS

In January 2016, imports of NR was recorded at 109,244 tonnes. Imports increased when compared to month-on-month and year-on-year at 588 tonnes (+0.5%) and 13,113 tonnes (+13.6%) respectively. The main type of NR imported were Standard Rubber (28.6%) and Latex Concentrate (24.6%). NR was imported mainly from Thailand (56.4%) and Viet Nam (13.9%).

 

4. DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

Domestic consumption of NR in January 2016 was 39,468 tonnes, dropped by 1,906 tonnes (-4.6%) from December 2015. However, when compared to January 2015, the domestic consumption of NR showed an increase of 1,349 tonnes (+3.5%).

Rubber gloves industry is the largest NR consumer at 29,497 tonnes (74.7%)

 

5. STOCKS

The level of stocks of NR held at the end of January 2016 rose by 25.2 per cent to 222,597 tonnes compared to the level of stocks of the previous month.  The biggest portion of the stocks was held by rubber processors (91.6%).

 

6. AVERAGE MONTHLY PRICE PER KILOGRAMME

The overall average monthly price of NR in January 2016 was lower compared to the previous months. The average monthly price of latex concentrate decrease 3.1 per cent to 347.53 sen compared to December 2015. The price of latex  concentrate  also  dropped  by  29.16 sen (-7.7%) from January 2015. The average monthly price of S.M.R. 20 was recorded at 466.89 sen per kilogramme in January 2016, reduced by 24.99 sen (-5.1.%) for month-on-month and 36.75 sen (-7.3%) for year-on-year.

 

7. EMPLOYMENT

A total of 11,718 persons were engaged in rubber estates at the end of January 2016 where 11,714 were paid employees with salaries & wages paid amounting to RM15.6 million. The number of paid employees declined 4.6 per cent for year-on-year.


8. PRODUCTIVITY

The productivity of NR production on estates was recorded at 147.6 kilogramme per hectare in January 2016. The productivity of NR production decrease by 8.2 kilogramme per hectare (-5.3%) when compared to month-on-month. Year-on-year also shows decline in productivity by 0.4 kilogramme per hectare (-0.3%).
