Overview
1. PRODUCTION
Production of natural rubber (NR) in August 2015 was recorded at 56,862 tonnes, increased by 2,134 tonnes (+3.9%) when compared to July 2015. Year-on-year, production also recorded an increase of 12.5 per cent. Production of NR by the smallholdings sector contributes 90.6 per cent whilst the remaining is from the estate sector. Smallholding and estate sectors showed an increase of NR production of 3.1 per cent and 12.7 per cent respectively as compared to the previous month.
2. EXPORTS
Exports of Malaysian NR in August 2015 reduced by 15.6 per cent to 67,773 tonnes when compared with July 2015. Nevertheless, exports increased by 23.9 per cent compared to August 2014. Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R.) contributed 95.3 per cent of the total NR exports that comprised 69.5 per cent of S.M.R. 20.
NR was mainly exported to the People’s Rep. of China (59.3%), followed by Germany (12.9%), U.S.A. (3.5%), Islamic Rep. of Iran (2.8%), Portugal (2.1%), France (1.8%), Brazil (1.5%), Turkey (1.4%) and Rep. of Korea (1.3%).
3. IMPORTS
In August 2015, imports of NR was recorded at 70,637 tonnes. Imports decreased when compared month-on-month and year-on-year at 7,971 tonnes (-10.1%) and 7,775 tonnes (-9.9%) respectively. The main type of NR imported was Latex Concentrate (36.6%) and Standard Rubber (35.7%).
NR was imported mainly from Thailand (50.6%) and Viet Nam (27.5%).
4. DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION
Domestic consumption of NR in August 2015 increased by 36 tonnes (+0.1%) to 40,619 tonnes from the previous month, whereas when compared to the previous year, it shows an increase of 107 tonnes (+0.3%).
The rubber gloves industry was the highest consuming industry of NR at 29,977 tonnes (73.8%), followed by tyre & tubes (8.0%) and rubber thread (7.7%). These three industries consumed more than half of the overall domestic consumption in the country with a total of 36,369 tonnes (89.5%).
5. STOCKS
The level of stocks of NR held at the end of August 2015 increased by 1.2 per cent to 130,679 tonnes compared to the level of stocks in July 2015. For year-on-year comparison, a reduction of 7.3 per cent was recorded. The biggest portion of the stocks was held by Rubber Processors (86.5%).
6. AVERAGE MONTHLY PRICE PER KILOGRAMME

The overall average monthly price of NR in August 2015 is lower from the previous months. The average monthly price of latex concentrate was 417.53 sen, a decrease of 4.7 per cent compared to July 2015. The price of latex concentrate also dropped by 9.16 sen (-2.1%) from August 2014.
The average monthly price of G.M.M. 20 was recorded at 522.98 sen per kilogramme in August 2015, dropped 17.59 sen (-3.3%) for month-on-month and 0.28 sen (-0.1%) for year-on-year.
7. EMPLOYMENT
The number of persons engaged in rubber estates at the end of August 2015 was 12,111 where 12,107 were paid employees with salaries & wages paid amounting to RM15.6 million. The number of paid employees decline 0.3 per cent for month-on-month and 5.0 per cent for year-on-year.
8. PRODUCTIVITY
The productivity of NR production on estates was recorded at 136.3 kilogramme per hectare in August 2015. The productivity of NR production went up 13.6 kilogramme per hectare (+11.1%) when compared to month-on-month. Year-on-year also shows an increase in productivity by 3.9 kilogramme per hectare (+2.9%).
