Overview
1. PRODUCTION
Production of natural rubber (NR) in September 2015 was recorded at 67,971 tonnes, increased by 10,605 tonnes (+18.5%) when compared to August 2015. Year-on-year, production also recorded an increase of 12.7 per cent. The smallholdings sector is the largest producer of Malaysia’s NR (91.9%) whilst the remaining is from the estate sector. For month-on-month, the NR production in the smallholding and estate sectors showed an increase of 19.9 per cent and 4.9 per cent respectively.
2. EXPORTS
A total of 61,231 tonnes of NR were exported in September 2015, dropped by 6,539 tonnes (-9.6%) as compared to August 2015. Comparison with the same month in 2014 showed that the exports has increased by 6,768 tonnes (+12.4%). Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R.) contributed 93.3 per cent of the total NR exports whereby 66.1 per cent was S.M.R. 20.
NR was mainly exported to the People’s Rep. of China (52.9%), followed by Germany (12.3%), Islamic Rep. of Iran (8.2%), U.S.A. (5.1%), Taiwan (1.8%), Brazil (1.7%), France (1.5%), Turkey (1.4%) and Rep. of Korea (1.3%).
3. IMPORTS
A total of 80,865 tonnes of NR was imported in September 2015, increased by 10,228 tonnes (+14.5%) from August 2015. Imports also went up by 7.8 per cent when compared to a year ago. The main types of NR imported were Latex Concentrate (33.4%) and Standard Rubber (30.2%).
NR was mainly imported from Thailand (54.1%) and Viet Nam (21.8%).
4. DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION
In September 2015, total domestic consumption of NR was recorded at 38,737 tonnes. Compared to August 2015, the domestic consumption of NR decreased by 2,140 tonnes (-5.2%). However, year-on-year comparison showed an increase of 1,426 tonnes (+3.8%).
Rubber gloves industry was the largest consumer of NR at 28,155 tonnes (72.7%), followed by tyre & tubes (8.0%) and rubber thread (7.7%). The total consumption for these three industries constituted of 88.4 per cent from the overall domestic consumption of NR.
5. STOCKS
In September 2015, the level of stocks was recorded at 136,964 tonnes, rose by 7,559 tonnes (+5.8%), compared to the level of stocks held last month. Nevertheless, the level of stocks showed a decrease of 6.0 per cent in this month as compared to last year in the same month. The biggest portion of the stocks was held by Rubber Processors (86.9%).
6. AVERAGE MONTHLY PRICE PER KILOGRAMME

In September 2015, the average monthly price of latex concentrate was 412.85 sen per kilogramme, decreased by 4.68 sen (-1.1%) from the previous month but increased by 19.72 sen (+5.0%) when compared to September 2014.
The average monthly price of S.M.R. 20 was recorded at 532.08 sen per kilogramme, went up by 9.10 sen (+1.7%) from August 2015 and 46.43 sen (+9.5%) from September 2014 respectively.
7. EMPLOYMENT
The total number of persons engaged in rubber estates at the end of September 2015 was 11,928 persons. Out of this total, 11,924 were paid employees with total salaries & wages amounting to RM15.6 million. The number of paid employees decreased by 1.4 per cent from August 2015 and 4.6 per cent from September 2014 respectively.
8. PRODUCTIVITY
In September 2015, the productivity of NR production on estates was recorded at 140.6 kilogramme per hectare. The productivity of NR production shows an increase by 7.5 kilogramme per hectare (+5.6%) when compared to month-on-month, whereas for year-on-year it was decreased by 3.6 kilogramme per hectare (-2.5%).
