Overview

1. PRODUCTION

Production of natural rubber (NR) in October 2015 was recorded at 70,843 tonnes, increased by 2,583 tonnes (+3.8%) from September 2015. Year-on-year comparison also shows an increase of  22,791 tonnes (+47.4%). The main contributor of NR was from the smallholding sector at 91.8 per cent whilst the remaining is from the estate sector. Smallholding and estate sector shows an increase in production of 3.6 per cent and 5.9 per cent respectively as compared to the previous month.

 

2. EXPORTS

Exports of Malaysian NR in October 2015 reduced by 9.5 per cent to 55,398 tonnes as compared to September 2015. Nevertheless, it shows an increased by 703 tonnes (+1.3%) if compared to a year ago. Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R.) contributes 94.3 per cent  from the total exports where 67.0 per cent is S.M.R. 20.

The main destination for exports of NR were the People’s Rep. of China (51.1%), followed by Germany (12.1%), Islamic Rep. of Iran (5.9%), U.S.A. (5.1%), Brazil (2.8%), Rep. of Korea  (2.6%), France (2.2%), Turkey (2.1%) and Taiwan (2.0%).

 

3. IMPORTS

In October 2015, imports of NR was 83,925 tonnes increased by 3.8 per cent when compared to September 2015. The increase of 7,064 tonnes (+9.2%) was recorded year-on-year. The main type of NR imported was Latex Concentrate (32.0%) and Standard Rubber (30.8%).

NR was mainly imported from Thailand and Viet Nam at 56.1 per cent and 21.3 per cent respectively.

 

4. DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

In October 2015, domestic consumption of NR was recorded at 41,790 tonnes, increased by 3,112 tonnes (+8.0%) when compared to September 2015. Year-on-year comparison also shows an increase of 4,561 tonnes (+12.3%).

The highest industry that consumed NR was the rubber gloves industry at 30,743 tonnes (73.6%), followed by tyre & tubes (8.3%) and rubber thread (7.3%). These three industries consumed 37,277 tonnes (89.2%) of NR.

 

5. STOCKS

The level of stocks of NR held at the end of October 2015 rose by 7.4 per cent to 147,318 tonnes compared to the level of stocks of the previous month. For year-on-year comparison, an increase of 11.3 per cent was recorded. The biggest portion of the stocks was held by Rubber Processors (87.7%).

 

6. AVERAGE MONTHLY PRICE PER KILOGRAMME

The average price of latex concentrate was recorded at 403.93 sen in October 2015, dropped by 8.92 sen (-2.2%) from the previous month whereas for year-on-year, it was increased by 23.36 sen (+6.1%). 

The average monthly price of S.M.R. 20 was recorded at 529.07 sen per kilogramme, decrease of 3.01 sen (-0.6%) when compared to month-on-month. Nevertheless, year-on-year comparison shows an increased by 43.33 sen (+8.9%).

 

7. EMPLOYMENT

In October 2015, the total number of workers engaged in rubber estates was 11,789 persons. The number of paid employees was 11,785 persons and receiving salaries & wages of RM15.9 million. Compared to the previous month, the number of paid employees decreased by 135 persons (-1.1%). Year-on-year, the number of paid employees dropped by 637 persons (-5.1%).


8. PRODUCTIVITY

The productivity of NR production on estates was recorded at 148.8 kilogramme per hectare in October 2015, increased by 8.3 kilogramme per hectare (+5.9%) from the previous month and 33.9 kilogramme per hectare (+29.5%) from the previous year.
