Overview
WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE REGISTERED SALES VALUE OF RM84.4 BILLION,
REBOUNDED 26.3 PER CENT IN MAY 2020
HIGHLIGHTS
Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade rebounded 26.3 per cent to record RM17.6 billion in May 2020 as compared to the previous month. This were attributed by Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade which increased 709.0 per cent (RM5.9 billion) and 30.5 per cent (RM8.6 billion) respectively. Wholesale Trade also increased by 8.0 per cent (RM3.0 billion). However, year-on-year for this sector went down 23.8 per cent.
Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade bounce back to record 97.2 points, an increased of 30.3 per cent as compared to the April 2020. The positive growth was recorded in all subsectors, namely Motor Vehicles (763.3%), Retail Trade (32.9%) and Wholesale Trade (12.0%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it recorded 25.5 per cent as against a month ago.
Wholesale Trade
Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM40.7 billion in May 2020, an increased of RM3.0 billion (8.0%) as against April 2020. The increment was supported by Non-Specialised Wholesale Trade (68.0%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (22.3%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (19.9%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (17.7%). For yearly comparison, sales of this sub-sector drop 23.6 per cent.
Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered a growth of 12.0 per cent to 99.1 points in May 2020 as compared to the last month. This was driven by the increased in Non-Specialised Wholesale Trade (79.6%), Wholesale of Household Goods (24.8%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (23.4%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (21.4%). For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector went up 6.5 per cent.
Retail Trade
Sales of Retail Trade registered a month-on-month growth of 30.5 per cent as compared to April 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (80.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (71.0%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (58.1%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (51.7%). As compared to May 2020, sales of this sub-sector shrank 16.2 per cent.
Retail Trade grew 32.9 per cent to 109.7 points in May 2020 as compared to April 2020. Inline with sales value, the increase were depicted in Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (71.8%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (56.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (54.8%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (54.1%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose to 31.4 per cent as compared to April 2020.
Motor Vehicles
Sales value of Motor Vehicles soared 709.0 per cent as against previous month. This increase were due to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of 1,405.5 per cent and 987.1 per cent respectively. However, year-on-year for sales value of Motor Vehicles decreased 49.5 per cent.
The volume index increased 763.3 per cent to register 54.6 points as compared to a month ago. The highest increment were contributed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (1,973.1%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (1,361.7%). For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index increased 700.6 per cent within the same period.
