Overview
In the first quarter 2020, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased 1.5 per cent to 127.5 points as compared to the same period in 2019. Wholesale Trade was the key performer by registering 2.5 per cent.
Seasonally adjusted volume index recorded a negative growth of 3.8 per cent as against the fourth quarter of 2019. For quarterly comparison, Motor Vehicles, Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors recorded a negative growth of 6.3 per cent, 4.2 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively.

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector
Volume index of Wholesale Trade posted a growth of 2.5 per cent to 126.8 points in the first quarter 2020 as compared to the same quarter in 2019. The growth was bolstered by Wholesale of Household Goods ( 3.9%) and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (3.6%).
Retail Trade Sub-sector
In first quarter 2020, Retail Trade sub-sector increased 1.8 per cent to 138.6 points year-on-year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores ( 5.5%) and Retail Sale in Non-Specialised Stores (4.9%).
Motor Vehicles Sub-sector
Volume index of Motor Vehicles dropped 3.5 per cent to 97.6 points in the first quarter 2020 as against the same period in 2019. The downfall was fueled by Sale of Motor Vehicles (-6.2%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (-1.9%).
