WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE REGISTERED SALES VALUE OF RM103.2 BILLION,
DECLINED 5.7 PER CENT IN MARCH 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

A total of  RM103.2  billion was recorded by sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade in March 2020, a decrease of  RM6.3  billion  or  -5.7   per  cent    as     compared    to     the    same     month    a    year    ago.   The    decline    was    attributed    to    Retail    Trade    which    decreased    RM2.9    billion   (-6.6%).    Similarly,    Motor    Vehicles    and    Wholesale    Trade    also    declined    of    RM1.9   billion  (-15.3%)   and   RM1.4  billion  (-2.7%)  respectively.

For performance across sub-sector, sales of Motor Vehicles declined  -15.3  per  cent in March 2020 as compared with the same period of the previous year. Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade also declined to register  -6.6  per  cent and  -2.7  per  cent respectively.

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 120.1 points, contracted to -6.1 per cent as compared to  the same month  of  the  previous year. The negative growth was recorded  in all subsectors, namely Wholesale Trade  -2.5 per cent, Retail  Trade  -7.5 per cent  and Motor Vehicles  -14.4  per cent.   As for seasonally adjusted volume  index,  it  recorded  -11.6  per  cent  as  against  a  month  ago.

The      growth      of     -6.1      per     cent    (year-on-year)     in      the      volume     index     of     Wholesale     &     Retail     Trade    was    driven    by    double-digit   fell   in  Motor  Vehicles,   -14.4  per  cent. This was followed by Retail Trade and  Wholesale Trade with  -7.5  per  cent  and  -2.5  per  cent respectively.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale  Trade  generated  sales  value  of   RM51.8  billion  in  March  2020, down  RM1.4  billion  (-2.7%) as against the corresponding month of the previous year. Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals, Other Specialised Wholesale and Wholesale of Household Goods contracted as against March 2019. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector also registered a negative growth of  1.6  per  cent.

Volume   index   of   Wholesale   Trade   shrank   2.5   per   cent   to   123.8   points   in  March  2020  as  compared  to  the  same  month  of the preceding year. This was driven by the contraction in Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals, Other Specialised Wholesale and Wholesale of Household Goods. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector registered a negative growth of  7.6  per  cent.

Retail Trade 

Sales  of  Retail  Trade  registered  a  year-on-year  growth  of  -6.6  per  cent  as  compared  to  March  2019.   Among  the  groups  that  contributed  to  the  negative  growth  were  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  and  sales  related  to  non-essential product namely Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores, Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores.

Volume index of Retail  Trade went  down  to  -7.5  per  cent  to  126.8  points  in  March  2020  as  against  the  same  month  of  previous  year.  Inline  with  the  sales  value,  this  was  attributed  to  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  and  sales related to non-essential product namely Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores, Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased to  -14.4  per  cent as compared to February 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales  value  of  Motor Vehicles  decreased  to  -15.3  per  cent  as  against  the  corresponding  period  of  the previous year. The decline was supported by Sale of Motor Vehicles (-19.9  per  cent), Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories (-8.9  per  cent), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (-9.8  per  cent) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles with  -10.7 per cent. Compared to February 2020, sales value showed a negative growth of  4.4  per  cent.

The  volume  index  registered   89.3   points,  decreased  to   -14.4   per   cent  compared  to  a  year  ago.  It  was  due  to  Sale  of  Motor  Vehicles which contracted to  -19.7  per  cent, Maintenance & Repair of  Motorcycles  (-11.2%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles  (-10.9%) and Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories  (-8.6%)  in March 2020. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index decreased  -15.4  per  cent.
