WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE REGISTERED SALES VALUE OF RM66.9 BILLION,
DECLINED 36.6 PER CENT IN APRIL 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

A total of  RM66.9 billion was recorded by sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade in April 2020, a decrease of  RM38.5 billion or  -36.6 per cent as  compared  to  the  same  month  a  year  ago. The  decline  was  caused  by  Retail  Trade  which  dropped  RM13.5 billion (-32.4%). Similarly,  Motor  Vehicles  and  Wholesale  Trade  also declined by  RM11.5 billion (-93.2%) and RM13.5 billion (-27.2%) respectively.

For performance across sub-sector, in April 2020, sales of Motor Vehicles declined  93.2 per cent as compared with the same period of the previous year.  Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade also declined to register  -32.4 per cent and   -26.3 per cent respectively.

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered  74.6 points, contracted to  -38.6 per cent  as compared to the same month of the previous year. The negative  growth  was  recorded  in  all  subsectors,  namely  Wholesale  Trade ( -27.5%), Retail  Trade  (-36.0%) and Motor Vehicles (-93.6%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it recorded  -33.6 per cent as against a month ago.

The growth of  -38.6 per cent (year-on-year) in the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade was driven by double-digit fall in Motor Vehicles with  -93.6 per cent. This  was  followed  by  Retail  Trade  and   Wholesale  Trade  with  -36.0 per cent   and   -27.5 per cent.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale  Trade  generated  sales  value  of  RM37.7 billion  in  April  2020, down  RM13.5 billion  (-27.2%)  as  against the corresponding month of the previous year. Non-specialised Wholesale Trade and  Other Specialised Wholesaleas recorded the biggest fall of  45.2 per cent and  39.4 per cent as against April 2019. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector also registered a negative growth of  27.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade shrank  27.5 per cent to  88.5 points in April 2020 as compared to the same month of the preceding year. This was driven by the contraction in Non-specialised Wholesale Trade, Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies and Other Specialised Wholesale. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector slipped  24.8 per cent.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a year-on-year growth of  -32.5 per cent as compared to April 2019. Among the groups that contributed to the negative growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores, Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores, Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores.

Volume index of Retail Trade went down  36.0 per cent to  82.6 points in April 2020 as against the same month of previous year. Inline with the sales value, the decline was depicted in Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores and sales related to non-essential product namely Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased to  -29.8 per cent as compared to March 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles decreased  93.2 per cent as against the corresponding period of the previous year. The  decline  due  to  Sale   of   Motor   Vehicles    which   registered   -93.7  per cent. Compared  to  March  2020,  sales  value  plummeted   92.2 per cent.

The volume index registered  6.3 points, decreased  93.6 per cent compared to a year ago. All groups under Motor Vehicles recorded a negative double digit growth led by Sale of Motor Vehicles with  -93.9 per cent in April 2020. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index slumped  26.1 per cent.
