WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE MALAYSIA RECORDS RM111.7 BILLION
IN JANUARY 2021

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded  RM111.7  billion  in  January  2021,  registering   -2.7  per  cent  contraction year-on year. The contraction  was   due  to  Motor  Vehicles  which  slipped  -13.8 per cent. Similarly,  Retail  Trade  and  Wholesale  Trade  also  decreased  -2.5 per cent and  -0.4 per cent respectively.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of  -2.9 per cent year-on-year to record 130.5 points. The decline was due to the decrease of  -13.1 per cent and  -3.2 per cent in Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade respectively. Wholesale  Trade  also  recorded   a   negative   growth   to   register   -0.1  per  cent.  As   for   seasonally   adjusted   volume   index, it  went  down   2.0  per  cent  month-on-month in January 2021.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM55.4 billion in January 2021, a decrease of RM0.2 billion (-0.4%) as against January 2020. Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals recorded a fall of  -6.0 per cent, Other Specialised Wholesale  -4.9 per cent and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis  -4.7 per cent as  compared  to  the  previous  year. For  monthly  comparison,  sales  of  this  sub-sector rose  0.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  131.8 points, contracted  0.1 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (-7.6%), Other Specialised Wholesale (-5.0%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-2.0%). As   for   seasonally   adjusted   volume   index,   it   increased   0.1  per  cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  2.5 per cent as compared to January 2020. Among  groups  that  contributed  to  this  fall  were  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  (-14.1%),  Retail  Sale  of  Other  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores (-7.0%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (-5.1%). Compared  with  December  2020,  sales  of  this  sub-sector edged down  2.6 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded  -3.2 per cent growth to  142.9 points as compared to January 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-12.5%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-8.0%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-6.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  2.2 per cent as against December 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of negative  13.8 per cent. This decrease was attributed to  Sale  of  Motor  Vehicles  which  registered  a  growth  of   -17.6  per  cent  and  Sale,  Maintenance  &  Repair  of  Motorcycle  -11.1 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector contracted  20.5 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles declined  -13.1 per cent year-on-year to reach  90.6 points. The decrease was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (-16.8%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (-11.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector went down  18.2 per cent month-on-month.
