WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE MALAYSIA RECORDS RM115.5 BILLION
IN DECEMBER 2020 AND GENERATE RM1.2 TRILLION IN 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of  Wholesale & Retail Trade  recorded  RM115.5  billion  in  December  2020  to  register  -0.3 per cent  year-on-year. This  was  due  to  Retail  Trade  which  contracted  2.0 per cent (-RM0.9 billion). Similarly, Wholesale Trade also recorded a decrease of  0.6 per cent (-RM0.3 billion). On  the  other  hand,  Motor  Vehicles  continued  a  positive  growth  of   7.4 per cent or an increase of  RM0.9 billion.

In  December  2020, volume  index  of  Wholesale  &  Retail Trade registered a growth of   -0.7 per cent year-on-year to record  133.8 points. The fall was due to Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade which decreased   2.9 per cent and  0.02 per cent respectively. In  contrast,  Motor  Vehicles  recorded  a  positive  growth  to  register  6.0 per cent. In  terms  of  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index, it  went up  1.3 per cent month-on-month.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM55.3 billion in December 2020, a decrease of RM0.3 billion (-0.6%) as against December 2019. Other Specialised Wholesale  and  Wholesale  on  a  Fee  or  Contract  Basis  recorded  a  fall of  6.4 per cent respectively as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased  4.8 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  131.3 points, contracted  0.02 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in  Other Specialised Wholesale  (-5.8%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-3.7%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  0.7 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  2.0 per cent as compared to December 2019. Among groups that contributed to this decrement were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-10.5%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-6.4%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-4.9%). Compared with November 2020, sales of this sub-sector rose  4.5 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded  -2.9 per cent growth to 145.3 points as compared to December 2019. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-9.1%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-7.7%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-5.5%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  0.9 per cent as against November 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of  7.4 per cent. This increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of  15.3 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle 6.9 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased  4.4 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles grew  6.0 per cent year-on-year to reach  108.9 points. The increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (16.1%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (6.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector went up  4.6 per cent month-on-month.
