WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE MALAYSIA RECORDS RM110.8 BILLION, WITH 0.2 PER CENT
YEAR-ON-YEAR GROWTH IN SEPTEMBER 2020, ENDING SIX MONTHS OF DECLINE

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales    value    of    Wholesale    &    Retail    Trade    recorded    RM110.8   billion    in    September    2020    with    a    growth  of   0.2  per  cent  year-on-year. This  was  the  first  positive  growth  recorded  after  the  Covid-19  outbreak,  led  by  Motor  Vehicles  which  advanced  by  17.1 per cent  or  an  increase  of  RM2.0  billion. Similarly,  Retail  Trade  rose  moderately  to  1.1 per cent (RM0.5 billion). On the other hand, Wholesale Trade contracted  -4.2 per cent (-RM2.3 billion) within the same period.

In    September    2020,   volume    index    of    Wholesale    &    Retail    Trade    was    on    the    positive   track   to   register   0.1 per cent to record  130.0 points as compared to the same month of the previous year. Motor Vehicles recorded a positive growth of  15.1 per cent. Retail Trade also increased  0.1 per cent within the same period. Contrarily, Wholesale Trade registered  -3.3 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it inched up   1.1 per cent month-on-month.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of  RM52.5 billion in September 2020, a decrease of RM2.3 billion (-4.2%) as against September 2019. Other Specialised Wholesale and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis recorded a fall of  14.2 per cent and  8.3 per cent respectively  as  compared  to  the  previous  year.  For  monthly  comparison,  sales  of  this sub-sector  increased  1.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  131.6 points, contracted  3.3 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Other Specialised Wholesale (-12.6%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-6.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  0.5 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a positive growth of  1.1 per cent as compared to September 2019. Among groups that contributed to this increment were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (9.2%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (8.2%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.2%) and  Retail  Sale  in  Non-specialised  Stores  (7.6%). Compared  with  August  2020,  sales  of  this  sub-sector  declined   2.5 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded  0.1 per cent growth to 134.9 points as compared to September 2019. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail  Trade  Not  in  Stores,  Stalls  or  Markets  (10.0%),  Retail  Sale  Via  Stalls  &  Markets  (7.5%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (7.5%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (6.7%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it expanded  2.3 per cent as against August 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of  17.1 per cent. This increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of  34.8 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle  9.4 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased  0.8 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles grew  15.1 per cent year-on-year to reach  112.2 points. The highest increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (41.0%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (7.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector went up  9.2 per cent month-on-month.
