Overview

In the third quarter of 2020, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rebounded 32.1 per cent to register 129.2 points as compared to second quarter of 2020 after registering an unprecedented growth of  -23.2 per cent in previous quarter. As for annual comparison, volume index improved to record -2.1 per cent from -23.4 per cent in second quarter.

Meanwhile, as for seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade, it grew 31.6 per cent as against the second quarter of 2020. This growth was underpinned by Motor Vehicles sub-sector with  106.7 per cent. Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors also advanced 27.1 per cent and 23.1 per cent respectively as compared to the previous quarter .

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

In the third quarter of 2020, volume index of Wholesale Trade on the positive track to record  23.8 per cent as compared to second quarter of the same year. The growth was attributed to Other Specialised Wholesale and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies which registered 38.8 per cent and 34.0 per cent respectively. For year-on-year growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade declined at a slower pace of  -3.5 per cent.

Retail Trade Sub-sector

For the third quarter of 2020, Retail Trade recorded 27.9 per cent growth as against the previous quarter, pushed up by Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores with 48.0 per cent growth. This was followed by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores which registered 42.7 per cent and Retail  Sale  of  Other  Household  Equipment  in  Specialised  Stores  of  42.3 per cent. For annual comparison, volume index was in recovery phase to record  -2.6 per cent from -21.2 per cent in second quarter.

Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume index of Motor Vehicles surged  107.1 per cent quarter-on-quarter in third quarter of 2020. This growth was fueled by Sales of Motor Vehicles which jumped 135.5 per cent followed by Sales of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories with 91.6 per cent. Maintenance  &  Repair  of  Motor  Vehicles also expanded   83.8 per cent  within  the  same  period. For performance of this sub-sector as againts the same quarter of the previous year, it went up  5.5 per cent.
