HIGHLIGHTS

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose  7.1 per cent to 160.8 points in October 2017 as compared to October 2016. The growth was  supported by the increase in Retail Trade (8.5%) and Wholesale Trade (7.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased by 1.7 per cent as compared to the preceding month.

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade stood at RM98.1 billion (9.0%) in October 2017 as compared to the corresponding period in 2016. The sales value consists of Wholesale Trade (RM48.5 billion), Retail Trade (RM37.8 billion) and Motor Vehicles (RM11.8 billion) businesses. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade (10.9%) and Wholesale Trade (9.5%) businesses.

Wholesale Trade Business

Volume index of Wholesale Trade grew 7.6 per cent to 175.8 points in October 2017 as compared to October 2016. Month-on-month basis, this volume index (seasonally adjusted) recorded negative  growth  0.4 per cent as against the previous month.

Sales value of Wholesale Trade business registered 9.5 per cent growth to RM48.5 billion as compared to the  corresponding month of the previous year. Month-on-month basis, this business registered negative  growth  1.5 per cent.

Retail Trade Business

Volume index of Retail Trade rose  8.5 per cent to 160.2 points in October 2017 as compared to the same month of previous year. Compared to September 2017, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade increased  by  2.4 per cent.

Retail Trade business recorded an increase in sales value to RM37.8 billion or 10.9 per cent as compared to last year. Month-on-month, sales value of this business increased 1.5 per cent.

Motor Vehicles Business

Year-on-year, volume index of Motor Vehicles recorded positive growth 0.1 per cent to 123.2 points in October 2017. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 5.7 per cent in October 2017 as against September 2017.

For this month, sales value of Motor Vehicles business increased  1.3 per cent to RM11.8 billion as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Sales value of Motor Vehicles business  increased  4.5 per cent as compared to the previous month.
