Overview

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (with steel bars and without steel bars) for almost all building categories in Peninsular Malaysia decreased between 0.1 and 0.6 per cent.
  • The BCI in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau also showed a decrease between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent, for almost all categories of building.
  • The BCI in Kuching, Sibu and Miri showed a decrease between 0.1 and 0.8 per cent from the previous month for almost all categories of building.

 

Performance Review – Indices (September 2019)

Without steel bars:

As compared to the previous month, the BCI in Peninsular Malaysia for region A (Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis) decreased between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent. In region C (Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan), BCI increased between 0.1 and 0.5 per cent for almost all categories of building. Meanwhile in region B (Perak), BCI decreased 0.1 per cent for 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for office) and increased 0.1 per cent for 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for accommodation) and (R.C.) piling.

The BCI in Kota Kinabalu decreased between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent for almost all categories of building. Meanwhile, the BCI in Sandakan for single storey (R.C.) building increased 0.1 per cent.

On the other hand, the BCI in Sarawak remained unchanged as compared to the previous month.

With steel bars:

The BCI in region A (Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis), region B (Perak) and region F (Kelantan & Terengganu) for almost all categories of building decreased between 0.1 and 0.6 per cent. However, the BCI in region C (Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan) for almost all categories of building increased between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent in September 2019 as compared to August 2019.

The BCI in Kota Kinabalu showed a decrease between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent for almost all categories of building. The BCI performance in Sandakan and Tawau remained unchanged as in the previous month.

Meanwhile, the BCI in Sibu decreased between 0.1 and 0.8 per cent for almost all categories of building as compared to August 2019.

 

Changes in Unit Price Indices (September 2019)

The changes in unit price indices of building materials by region throughout Malaysia are shown in Table 1.
