KEY HIGHLIGHTS

• The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (with and without steel bars) for almost all building categories in Peninsular Malaysia increased between 0.1 and 0.5 per cent.
• Similarly, the BCI in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau showed an increase of 0.1 to 0.4 per cent, for almost all categories of building.
• On the contrary, the BCI in Kuching and Sibu decreased between 0.1 and 0.5 per cent as compared to the previous month.

Performance Review – Indexes (July 2019)

Without steel bars:

As for Peninsular Malaysia, the BCI in Perak (Region B) for 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for accommodation) decreased 0.1 per cent as compared to the previous month.

Meanwhile, the BCI for all categories of building in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau increased between 0.1 and 0.4 per cent in July 2019 as compared to June 2019.

The performance of BCI in Sibu remained unchanged in June 2019. However, the BCI of this month recorded an increase between 0.1 and 0.4 per cent. In Kuching, the index declined between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent.

With steel bars:

The BCI in region F (Terengganu & Kelantan) for almost all categories of building decreased between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent with the exception of Timber building and Timber piling that recorded an increase of 0.3 per cent.

Meanwhile, the BCI in Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan showed an increase between 0.1 and 0.4 per cent. In Tawau, the BCI remained unchanged as in the previous month for almost all categories of building except Timber Building (0.2%), Timber Piling (0.4%) and (R.C.) Piling (-0.1%).

The performance of the BCI in Sibu decreased between 0.1 and 0.5 per cent for all categories of building while the BCI for Miri remained unchanged from the previous month.

Changes in Unit Price Indices (July 2019)

The changes in unit price indices of building materials by region throughout Malaysia are shown in Table 1.
