Overview

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (with and without steel bars) for almost all building categories in Peninsular Malaysia decreased between 0.1 and 0.6 per cent.
  • The BCI in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau also showed a decrease between 0.1 and 0.9 per cent, for almost all categories of building.
  • Meanwhile, the BCI in Kuching, Sibu and Miri showed no changes from the previous month for almost all categories of building.

 

Performance Review – Indices (August 2019)

Without steel bars:

As compared to the previous month, the BCI in Peninsular Malaysia for region C (Selangor, WP Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan) increased 0.2 per cent for almost all categories of building, except 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for office) and (R.C.) Piling increased 0.3 per cent.

Meanwhile, the BCI in Sandakan increased between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent for almost all categories of building.

The performance of BCI in Sibu remained unchanged in August 2019. However, the BCI for 2-4 storey (R.C.) building (flat roof) increased 0.1 per cent as compared to July 2019.

With steel bars:

The BCI in region E (Pahang) and F (Kelantan & Terengganu) for almost all categories of building decreased between 0.2 and 0.6 per cent. However, the BCI in region A (Pulau Pinang, Kedah and Perlis) and region C (Selangor, WP Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan) for all categories of building increased between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent in August 2019 as compared to July 2019.

Meanwhile, the BCI in Sandakan showed a decrease between 0.1 and 0.9 per cent for almost all categories of building. However, the BCI for Timber building and Single storey steel frame (building) in Sandakan increased 0.2 and 0.1 per cent respectively.

In Sibu, the BCI for single storey (R.C.) building increased 0.1 per cent as compared to July 2019.

 

Changes in Unit Price Indices (August 2019)

The changes in unit price indices of building materials by region throughout Malaysia are shown in Table 1.
