Overview
Peninsular Malaysia
The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (without steel bars) for all categories of building in region A (Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis), D (Johor), E (Pahang) and F (Terengganu & Kelantan) increased between 0.1 and 1.7 per cent in January 2019 as compared to the previous month. In contrast, the BCI in region B (Perak) and C (Selangor, WP Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan) decreased between 0.1 and 1.5 per cent except for Timber building and Timber piling, increased by 0.6 and 0.7 per cent each.
The BCI (with steel bars) for almost all categories of building in region A (Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis), B (Perak) and C (Selangor, WP Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan) and F (Terengganu & Kelantan) decreased between 0.1 and 1.9 per cent except for Timber building (0.6 per cent) and Timber piling (0.7 per cent). In contrast, the BCI in region E (Pahang) for several categories of building increased 0.1 per cent as compared to the previous month. The BCI for (R.C.) piling in region D (Johor), E (Pahang) and F (Terengganu & Kelantan) increased 0.1 per cent as compared to the previous month.
The changes in unit price indices of building materials by regions in Peninsular Malaysia are shown in Table 1.
Sabah
The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (without steel bars) for all categories of building in Sandakan increased between 0.2 and 3.0 per cent in January 2019 except Timber piling and Single storey steel frame (tower only). Likewise, the BCI in Tawau showed an increase of 0.1 per cent for Single storey (R.C.) building, 2-4 storey (R.C) building (flat roof), 2-4 storey (R.C.) building (pitched roof), 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for accommodation) and 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for office). While, the BCI in Kota Kinabalu remained unchange as compared to the previous month.
The BCI (with steel bars) for all categories of building in Sandakan increased between 0.1 and 1.2 per cent in January 2019 as compared to previous month except Timber piling. In Sandakan, the BCI that showed changes was 2-4 storey (R.C.) building (flat roof) and 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for office), increased 0.1 per cent each as compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, the BCI in Kota Kinabalu unchanged except for 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for accommodation) increased 0.1 per cent.

Sarawak
The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (without steel bars) for all categories of building in Kuching decreased between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent in January 2019 as compared to the previous month. The BCI in Sibu increased 0.1 per cent for Single storey (R.C.) building, 2-4 storey (R.C) building (pitched roof), 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for accommodation) and 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for office). Meanwhile, the BCI in Miri for all categories of building remained unchange as compared to the previous month except for Single storey (R.C.) building, increased 0.1 per cent.
The BCI (with steel bars) for all categories of building in Kuching decreased between 0.1 and 0.3 per cent in January 2019. Similarly, the BCI in Sibu decreased between 0.1 and 0.6 per cent. In contrast, the BCI in Miri increased 0.1 per cent for 5 storey and above (R.C.) building (for office) and Timber building as compared to the previous month.
The changes in unit price indices of building materials by region in Sarawak are shown in Table 3.
