Overview

Starting from July 2018, Building Materials Cost Index is using (July 2017=100) as a base year. Weighted building materials by building category are based on July 2017 prices updated by the Public Works Department.

Peninsular Malaysia

The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (without steel bars and with steel bars) for almost all categories of building in all regions showed increases in July 2018 as compared to June 2018. However, the BCI (with steel bars) in Perak for 5 storey and above building (for accommodation) and 5 storey and above building (for office) increased 0.1 per cent respectively as compared to the previous month. 

The unit price indices of building materials that showed changes by regions in Peninsular Malaysia are shown in Table 1.

Sabah

The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (without steel bars and with steel bars) in all regions showed decreases for almost all categories of building in July 2018 as compared to June 2018. However, the BCI (with steel bars) for R.C piling in Kota Kinabalu and Tawau; single storey steel frame (building) in Kota Kinabalu; and single storey steel frame (tower only) in Kota Kinabalu increased as compared to the previous month.

The changes in the unit price indices for building materials by region in Sabah are shown in Table 2.

Sarawak

The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) (without steel bars and with steel bars) in Kuching showed increases in July 2018 as compared to the previous month. In contrast, the BCI in Sibu decreased. While, the BCI in Miri unchanged.

The changes in the unit price indices for building materials by region in Sarawak are in Table 3.
