Overview

1. PRODUCTION

Production of natural rubber (NR) in June 2015 was recorded at 53,383 tonnes, an increased of 14,367 tonnes (+36.8%) compared to the previous month. For year-on-year, the production was decreased by 2,191 tonnes (-3.9%). The smallholding sector was the main NR producer at 48,558 tonnes (91.0%), while the remaining is from the estate sector. For month-on-month, smallholding and estate sectors recorded an increase in production at 36.4 per cent and 41.7 per cent respectively.


2. EXPORTS

In June 2015, exports of NR was recorded at 66,394 tonnes. Exports increased by 25,882 tonnes (+63.9%) from the previous month and 14,809 tonnes (+28.7%) from a year ago. From the total exports of NR, 96.3 per cent was contributed by the Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R.) that comprised 64.6 per cent of S.M.R.20.

The People’s Rep. of China was the main destination for NR exports (55.5%), followed by Germany (11.3%), Islamic Rep. of Iran (4.7%), U.S.A. (4.7%), Finland (3.5%), Brazil (2.0%), Taiwan (1.9%), France (1.7%) and Portugal (1.5%).


3. IMPORTS

Malaysia’s NR imports in June 2015 was 68,485 tonnes with an increase of 2,255 tonnes (+3.4%) as compared to May 2015. However, the imports decreased by 4,212 tonnes (-5.8%) as compared to June 2014. Latex Concentrate and Standard Rubber were the main type of NR imported, at 41.9 per cent and 32.0 per cent respectively.

The main suppliers of NR were from Thailand (58.2%) and Viet Nam (14.2%).


4. DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

Domestic consumption of NR was recorded at 40,201 tonnes in June 2015, increased by 1,008 tonnes (+2.6%) from May 2015. Compared to the same month in 2014, the domestic consumption also increased by 1,318 tonnes (+3.4%).

The largest industry that has comsumed NR was the rubber gloves industry with a total of 29,192 tonnes (72.6%), followed by rubber thread (9.4%) and tyre & tubes (7.9%). The total consumption from these three industries covered more than half of the overall NR domestic consumption with a total of 36,151 tonnes (89.9%).


5. STOCKS

The level of NR stocks was recorded at 131,136 tonnes at the end of June 2015, dropped by 543 tonnes (-0.4%) as compared to May 2015. NR stocks also dropped by 1,164 tonnes (-0.9%) when compared to the level of stocks a year ago.


6. AVERAGE MONTHLY PRICE PER KILOGRAMME
(Noon Quotations - F.O.B.)

The average monthly price of latex concentrate was recorded at 496.52 sen per kilogramme in June 2015. Month-on-month comparison shows an increase of 48.94 sen (+10.9%) whereas for year-on-year the price went up by 34.59 sen (+7.5%).

The average monthly price of S.M.R. 20 was recorded at 580.52 sen per kilogramme, increased by 40.02 sen (+7.4%) from May 2015 and 36.64 sen (+6.7%) from June 2014.


7. EMPLOYMENT

The total number of persons engaged in rubber estates at the end of June 2015 was 12,156 persons. The paid employees were 12,152 persons with total salaries & wages paid amounting to RM15.0 million. The number of paid employees decreased by 0.5 per cent from May 2015 and 4.1 per cent from June 2014.


8. PRODUCTIVITY
The productivity of NR production on estates was recorded at 124.6 kilogramme per hectare in June 2015, rose by 36.5 kilogramme per hectare (+41.4%) from the previous month. Whereas for year-on-year it was dropped by 7.9 kilogramme (-6.0%).
