Exports

On a-month-on-month basis, in March 2016, the export unit value index decreased 1.4% to 102.8 points which was mainly contributed by mineral fuels (-3.7%), machinery & transport equipment (-1.9%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-1.9%).The export volume index posted an increase of 19.1% to 121.7 points. The increase was mainly due to machinery & transport equipment (+22.0%), chemicals (+20.6%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (+18.1%).In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index rose 5.1%..

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index registered a decrease of 5.2%. In contrast, the export volume index increased 5.7%. 

 

Imports

In March 2016, the import unit value index decreased 0.6% to 107.1 points. The decrease was attributed to mineral fuels (-6.4%), food (-1.5%) and machinery & transport equipment (-0.4%). However the import volume index increased 12.9% to 117.5 points. This expansion was led by food (+18.9%), chemicals (+18.7%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+18.1%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index decreased 5.0%.

On a-year-on-year basis, the import unit value index registered an increase of 0.6% while the import volume index decreased 6.1%.

 

Terms of trade

In March 2016, Malaysia’s terms of trade decreased 0.7% when compared with the preceding month. On a year-on-year basis, a reduction of 5.7% was registered.
