MONTH-ON-MONTH COMPARISON:
Exports
In December 2015, Malaysia’s export value recorded an increase of 1.0% to RM68.3 billion where the export volume index rose 0.9% to 109.3 points. The rise was mainly contributed by miscellaneous manufactured articles (+13.4%), machinery & transport equipment (+6.6%) and chemicals (+6.5%).
However, the export unit value index recorded only a small increase of 0.1% to 141.2 points. The increase was attributed to machinery & transport equipment (+2.3%), followed by manufactured goods (+1.3%) and chemicals (+0.3%).
Seasonally adjusted figure
In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 2.2% to 106.5 points.
Imports
In December 2015, Malaysia’s total import value registered an increase of 5.1% to RM60.3 billion where the import volume index rose 5.0% to 127.0 points. This was led by food (+19.6%), chemicals (+11.3%) and mineral fuels (+6.5%).
Similarly, the import unit value index increased marginally by 0.1% to 133.5 points. This was mainly attributed to miscellaneous manufactured articles (+2.9%), machinery & transport equipment (+1.1%) and food (+0.6%).
Seasonally adjusted figure
In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in December 2015 decreased 3.9% to 123.9 points.
YEAR-ON-YEAR COMPARISON:
Exports
Malaysia’s export value increased 1.4% from RM67.4 billion where the export unit value index registered an increase of 3.5% from 136.4 points which was led by chemicals (+8.6%), machinery & transport equipment (+6.2%) and manufactured goods (+4.8%).
Meanwhile, the export unit value index decreased 2.5% from 112.2 points. The decrease was mainly due to mineral fuels (-28.0%) and chemicals (-4.4%).
Imports
In December 2015, the import value posted an increase of 3.2% from RM58.5 billion where the import volume index increased marginally 0.4% from 126.5 points. The increase was mainly due to miscellaneous manufactured articles (+21.7%), chemicals (+17.2%) and food (+14.8%).
Meanwhile, the import unit value index increased 2.7% from 129.9 points. This was contributed by miscellaneous manufactured articles (+6.3%), manufactured good (+4.1%) and machinery & transport equipment (+3.9%).
TERMS OF TRADE
In December 2015, Malaysia’s terms of trade decreased marginally 0.03% to 105.8 points. The decrease was mainly registered in animal & vegetable oils & fats (-5.4%), mineral fuels (-2.7%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-2.7%).
On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade increased 0.8% from 105.0 points. The increase was mainly recorded in chemicals (+6.2%), mineral fuels (+5.2%) and beverages & tobacco (+4.7%).
