External Trade Indices

Overview

Beginning January 2016, Malaysia’s external trade indices have been rebased to 2010 prices (2010=100). The previous series was based on 2005 prices.  The rebase to 2010 prices was undertaken to reflect a more up-to-date price as well as structure of external merchandise trade in Malaysia.

Exports

On a-month-on-month basis, in January 2016, the export unit value index decreased 1.1% to 105.8 points and this was attributed to mineral fuels (-10.0%). The export volume index also decreased 6.9% which was led by manufactured goods (-15.2%) and chemicals (-9.5%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 8.0%.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index registered a decrease of 2.1%. In contrast, the export volume index increased 1.2%.

 

Imports

In January 2016, the import unit value index decreased 0.7% to 107.9 points  compared to December 2015 and this was led by mineral fuels (-11.2%) and inedible crude materials (-3.2%). Reflecting the same trend, the import volume index dropped 5.7%, mainly attributed to animal & vegetable oils & fats (-53.0%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (-15.6%) and mineral fuels (-10.0%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index decreased 5.4%.

On a-year-on-year basis, the import volume index and unit value index increased 1.7% and 1.6% respectively.

 

Terms of trade

In January 2016, Malaysia’s terms of trade decreased 0.3% when compared with December 2015. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade registered a reduction of 3.7%.
