Exports

On a m-o-m basis, in July 2016, the export unit value index decreased 0.5% to103.3 points. This was mainly attributed to animal & vegetable oils & fats (-5.4%) and machinery & transport equipment (-1.0%). On the same trend, the export volume index also decreased 9.5% to 108.9 points which was led by manufactured goods (-22.4%), mineral fuels (-10.7%) and machinery & transport equipment (-10.3%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 9.6%.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and  export volume index registered a decrease of 3.6% and 2.0% respectively. 

 

Imports

In July 2016, the import unit value index increased 0.5% to 108.4 points. The increase was attributed to mineral fuels (+8.7%), food (+0.6%) and manufactured goods (+0.4%). Meanwhile, the import volume index decreased 5.3% to 121.4 points. This contraction was led by mineral fuels (-25.0%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (-18.4%) and chemicals (-12.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index registered a decrease of 10.7%

On a-year-on-year basis, the import unit value index registered an increase of 0.3%, whereas the import volume index registered a decrease of 5.1%.

 

Terms of trade

In July 2016, Malaysia’s terms of trade decreased 1.0% to 95.2 points when compared with the preceding month, while a reduction of 3.9% was recorded        year-on-year.
