Exports

On a-month-on-month basis, in April 2016, the export unit value index decreased 0.3% to 102.5 points which was mainly attributed to mineral fuels (-5.6%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (-0.8%) and manufactured goods (-0.5%). The export volume index posted a decrease of 7.6% to 112.4 points. The decrease was mainly due to inedible crude materials (-16.9%), manufactured goods (-11.0%) and chemicals (-9.4%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index dropped 1.9%.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index registered a decrease of 3.0%. In contrast, the export volume index increased 4.8%.

 

Imports

In April 2016, the import unit value index dropped 0.9% to 106.1 points. The decline was attributed to animal & vegetable oils & fats (-5.2%), chemicals (-1.9%) and manufactured goods (-1.8%). However the import volume index decreased 4.7% to 111.9 points. The decrease was mainly led by machinery & transport equipment (-8.1%) and mineral fuels (-3.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index decreased 2.9%.

On a-year-on-year basis, both the import unit value index and the import volume index registered a decrease of 0.3% and 1.9% respectively.

 

Terms of trade

In April 2016, Malaysia’s terms of trade rose 0.6% when compared with the preceding month, while a reduction of 2.6% was recorded year-on-year.
