PERFORMANCE OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INDEX

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased by 4.5% in May 2015 as compared to the same month in the previous year. The rise in May 2015 was supported by the positive growth in all indices: Manufacturing  (3.2%), Mining (9.0%) and Electricity (1.2%). The IPI in April 2015 remained unchanged by 4.0% year-on-year.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the IPI in May 2015 rose 1.5% month-on-month due to the increase in Manufacturing (0.4%) and Mining (4.0%) indices. Meanwhile, Electricity index fell by 1.3%.

 
   

PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Year-on-year, Manufacturing output posted a slower growth of 3.2% in May 2015 as compared to 4.2% registered in April 2015. The major sub-sectors which increased in May 2015 were: Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (3.8%); Electrical and Electronics Products (4.0%); and Non-metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal and Fabricated Metal Products (2.8%). On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, Manufacturing output grew marginally by 0.4% in May 2015.

  

 

PERFORMANCE OF MINING SECTOR

The Mining sector output recorded a strong growth of 9.0% in May 2015 compared to the same month in 2014. This expansion was mainly driven by the increase of Crude Oil index at 18.8%. The Natural Gas index, however, declined by 1.9%. As against April 2015, seasonally adjusted output for the Mining sector increased by 4.0%.

   

PERFORMANCE OF ELECTRICITY SECTOR

The Electricity sector output expanded by 1.2% in May 2015 on yearly basis. In seasonally adjusted terms, Electricity sector output contracted 1.3% in May 2015 as compared to the previous month.

 
PERFORMANCE OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INDEX FOR THE PERIOD JANUARY TO MAY 2015

Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index for the period of January to May 2015 grew by 5.6% as compared to the same period in the previous year. The expansion was contributed by the increase of all indices: Manufacturing (4.8%), Mining (8.1%) and Electricity (3.2%).
