WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE REGISTERED SALES VALUE OF RM102.9 BILLION,
MAINTAINED A DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH OF 21.8 PER CENT IN JUNE 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM102.9 billion in June  2020, expanded  21.8 per cent as compared to the previous month. This  increase   was  attributed  to  Wholesale  Trade  and  Motor  Vehicles  with  RM8.3 billion  (20.3%)  and  RM5.3 billion (78.9%) respectively. Retail Trade also rose RM4.8 billion (13.0%). However, year-on-year growth for this sector went down  8.4 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered  121.7 points, an increase of  25.2 per cent as compared to the previous month. The positive growth was  recorded in all subsectors, namely Motor Vehicles (90.2%), Wholesale Trade (20.8%) and Retail Trade (18.8%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it posted a gain of  21.9 per cent as against a month ago.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM49.0 billion in June 2020, an increase of RM8.3 billion (20.3%) as against May 2020. The  increment  was  supported  by  Other  Specialised  Wholesale  (35.6%)  and  Wholesale  of  Machinery,  Equipment  &  Supplies  (23.2%). For  yearly  comparison, sales  of  this  sub-sector  dropped   8.7 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered a growth of  20.8 per cent to  119.8 points in June 2020 as compared to the preceding month. This was driven by the increase in Other Specialised Wholesale (41.1%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (21.2%). For  monthly  comparison,  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  of  this  sub-sector  went  up   22.2 per cent.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a monthly growth of  13.0 per cent as compared to May 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (20.2%), Retail  Sale  of  Other  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (18.8%), Retail  Sale  of  Cultural  &  Recreation  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores (17.9%), Retail  Sale  of  Other  Household  Equipment  in Specialised Stores (16.7%)  and Retail Sale of Information & Communication  Equipment  in  Specialised  Stores  (13.7%). Compared with June 2019, sales of this sub-sector shrank  9.2 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade grew  18.8 per cent to  130.4 points in June 2020 as compared to May 2020. In line with the sales value, the increase was depicted in Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (30.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (27.9%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (25.1%) and Retail Sale of Information & Communication Equipment in Specialised Stores (21.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose to  11.3 per cent as against May 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales  value  of  Motor  Vehicles  rose  78.9 per cent  as  against  the  previous  month. This  increase  was  due  to  Sale  of  Motor  Vehicles  which  registered  a  growth  of   113.5 per cent. For annual comparison, this sub-sector decreased  4.5 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased  90.2 per cent to register  103.8 points as compared to a month ago. The highest increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (160.2%). Within the same period, seasonally adjusted volume index expanded  84.8 per cent.
