HIGHLIGHTS

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded an increase of  9.6 per cent to 172.9 points in July 2018 as compared to July 2017.  The  expansion  was contributed  by  both  Retail Trade (12.0%) and Motor Vehicles (11.7%).  Seasonally  adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased 1.3 per cent over the preceding month.

Sales  value  of  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  continued  to  exceed   RM100   billion  for  three  consecutive  months  recording  RM106.5   billion  in  July  2018. In   terms  of   growth,  the  sales  value  increased   10.3   per cent   as   compared   to   the  corresponding  period  in  2017, driven  by  Retail Trade (13.3%) and Motor Vehicles (12.1%).

Wholesale Trade

Volume index of Wholesale Trade grew  6.7 per cent to 173.5 points in July 2018 as  compared to July 2017. Month-on-month basis, seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector registered an increase of   0.2 per cent.

Sales value of Wholesale Trade recorded  7.2 per cent growth to RM49.2 billion as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Month-on-month, this sub-sector declined   2.5 per cent.

Retail Trade 

Year-on-year, volume index of Retail Trade registered a growth rate of  12.0 per cent to  183.6 points in this month. Compared to June 2018, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector increased   1.0 per cent.

Sales value of Retail Trade recorded an increase of  13.3 per cent to RM43.4 billion as compared to July 2017. Month-on-month, sales value of this sub-sector registered positive growth of   1.7 per cent.  

Motor Vehicles

Volume index of Motor Vehicles rose  11.7  per cent to  145.0  points in July 2018 as compared to a year ago. This strong growth was driven by the increase in sales of motor vehicles following the decline in car prices due to the implementation of zero-rated tax. For month-on-month comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector recorded   4.8 per cent growth.

For   this   month,   sales   value   of    Motor    Vehicles    amounted    to   RM13.9 billion   or    an   increase  of    12.1  per  cent as   compared   to  July  2017.  Month-on-month, sales value registered positive growth of   6.5 per cent.
