Overview

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade expanded  7.0 per cent to 166.5 points in second quarter 2018 as compared to the same period in 2017. The growth was driven by expansions in Retail Trade of   8.1 per cent.
 

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade went  up  3.2 per cent as against the first quarter 2018. The increase was propelled by the Retail Trade sub-sector with   5.0 per cent.

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

Volume  index  of  Wholesale  Trade  grew  6.9 per cent  to  177.2 points  in  the second  quarter  2018  as compared to  second  quarter  2017. The  growth  was  supported  mainly  by  Wholesale  of  Household  Goods  ( 9.2%)   and  Wholesale of  Food,  Beverages  and  Tobacco   (8.7%).

Retail Trade Sub-sector

In  second  quarter  2018, the  Retail  Trade sub-sector  registered  a growth of   8.1 per cent   to  170.3 points  year-on-year. The  growth  was  driven  by  Retail  Sale of  Food, Beverages  and  Tobacco  in  Specialised  Stores  (11.5%)   and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores  (10.7%).

Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume   Index  of   Motor   Vehicles   which  includes  Parts   and    Accessories    posted   an   increase   of    3.5 per cent to 129.0 points   in  the  second  quarter 2018 as against the  same  quarter 2017. The  increase was contributed by   Maintenance  and  Repair of  Motor  Vehicles  (4.8%) and Sale, Maintenance and Repair of  Motorcycles   and  Related  Parts  and  Accessories  (3.9%).
