Overview

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade grew  6.5 per cent to  163.1 points in first quarter 2018 as compared to the same period in 2017.  The  growth  was supported  mainly  by  expansions  in   Wholesale  Trade  and  Retail  Trade  sub-sectors,  with   7.6 per cent and  7.5 per cent respectively.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased  1.1 per cent as against the fourth quarter 2017. The increase was propelled by the Retail Trade sub-sector with  1.7 per cent.

Performance of Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

Volume index of Wholesale Trade expanded 7.6 per cent to  172.3 points in the first quarter 2018 as compared to first quarter 2017. The growth was primarily driven by Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Livestock (11.9%), Other Specialised Wholesale (8.1%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (7.9%).

Performance of Retail Trade Sub-sector

In first quarter 2018, the Retail Trade sub-sector posted an increase of  7.5 per cent to  169.3 points year-on-year. The growth was backed by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (10.6%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (10.5%) and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (8.0%).

Performance of Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume Index of Motor Vehicles which includes Parts and Accessories dropped to  0.7 per cent to  123.2 points in the first quarter 2018 as against the same quarter 2017. The decrease was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (-2.7%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles & Related Parts & Accessories (-0.9%).
