HIGHLIGHTS
Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade continue to grow, recorded 5.8 per cent to 166.1 points in May 2018 as compared to May 2017. The gain was supported by expansion in both Retail Trade (7.5%) and Wholesale Trade (7.0%). Within the same month, seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased 1.4 per cent over the preceding month.
Once again, the sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade exceeded RM100 billion for the third times to record RM103.7 billion in May 2018 (January 2018: RM101.1 billion; March 2018: RM103.8 billion). In terms of growth, the sales value increased 7.0 per cent as compared to the corresponding period in 2017, driven by Retail Trade ( 9.3%) and Wholesale Trade ( 7.8%).
Wholesale Trade
Volume index of Wholesale Trade grew 7.0 per cent to 181.2 points in May 2018 as compared to May 2017. Month-on-month basis, this volume index (seasonally adjusted) recorded positive growth of 1.3 per cent.
Wholesale Trade regained its momentum to record a sales value of RM50.5 billion, expanded 7.8 percent compared to the previous year. Month-on-month basis, this business rose 4.0 per cent.
Retail Trade
Year-on-year, volume index of Retail Trade registered a growth rate of 7.5 per cent, to register 166.3 points in this month. Compared to April 2018, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade increased by 3.1 per cent.
In the month of review, Retail Trade recorded sales value of RM40.9 billion, an increase of 9.3 per cent compared to May 2017. On average, monthly sales of every establishment recorded RM162,000 (April 2018: RM155,000). Month-on-month, sales value of this business also improved remarkably from negative growth of 4.2 per cent to 4.5 per cent.
Motor Vehicles
Volume index of Motor Vehicles recorded negative growth of 4.5 per cent to 126.2 points in May 2018 as compared to a year ago. For month-on-month comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this business also recorded negative growth of 1.6 per cent.
Sales value of Motor Vehicles amounted to RM12.3 billion, which was the highest attained since July 2017 (RM12.4 billion). For year-on-year comparison, the sales value of this sub-sector recorded negative growth of 3.1 per cent. Nevertheless, for monthly comparison, the sales value rebounded to positive growth of 1.8 per cent after experiencing a negative growth of 1.7 per cent in April 2018.
