Overview

In 2019, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded a growth of 6.1 per cent to 129.5 points. In the fourth quarter, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased 5.7 per cent to 132.8 points as compared to the same period in 2018. Retail Trade was the key performer by registering 6.9 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 0.2 per cent as against the third quarter of 2019. Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 0.4 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively.  Meanwhile,  Motor  Vehicles  contracted  1.8 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

Volume index of Wholesale Trade posted a growth of  4.9 per cent to 131.8 points in the fourth quarter 2019 as compared to the same quarter in 2018. The growth  was  bolstered  by  Wholesale  of Household Goods  (6.3%)  and  Other Specialised  Wholesale  (6.1%).

Retail Trade Sub-sector

In fourth quarter 2019, Retail Trade sub-sector expanded 6.9 per cent to 144.2 points year-on-year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (8.7%) and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (8.2%).

Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 3.6 per cent to 103.9 points in the fourth quarter 2019 as against the same period in 2018. The  increase  was  fueled by  Sale  of  Motor  Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Sale of Motor Vehicles which expanded  4.3 per cent and 3.7 per cent  respectively.
