Exports

On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, in January 2019, the export unit value index recorded a reduction of 1.3% to 114.1 points which was mainly attributed to a decrease in  the  index  of  mineral  fuels  (-5.9%)  followed  by  animal  &  vegetable  oils  &  fats  (-1.7%) and manufactured goods (-0.7%). Meanwhile, the export volume index registered an increase of 3.5% to 140.7 points. The increase was led by the index of animals & vegetable oils & fats (+26.0%), machinery & transport equipment (+3.7%) and mineral fuels (+2.0%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index increased 9.1% to 143.1 points.

When compared to the previous year, both the export unit value index and volume index posted an increase of 1.3% and 1.7% respectively.”

Imports

In January 2019, the import unit value index decreased 1.3% to 116.1 points as compared to December 2018, which was mainly led by a decrease in  the  index  of mineral  fuels  (-8.8%)  followed  by  inedible  crude  material  (-1.4%)  and  manufactured goods  (-0.4%). Meanwhile, the import volume index increased 2.8% to 144.7 points. The increment was mainly attributed to the increases in the index of inedible crude material (+16.6%), manufactured goods (+11.5%) and food (+10.9%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in January 2019 increased 4.4% to 144.6 points.

On a year-on-year basis, the import unit value index and import volume index posted increases of 0.2% and 0.8% respectively.

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade increased 0.1% to 98.3 points when compared with December 2018. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade also rose 1.1% from 97.2 points.
