Exports

On a-month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, in May 2017, the export unit value index decreased 1.2% to 112.5 points which was mainly attributed to animal & vegetable oils & fats (-4.6%), mineral fuels (-2.5%) and machinery & transport equipment (-0.6%) In contrast, the export volume index increased 8.6% to 132.6 points. This was contributed by animal & vegetable oils & fats (+18.5%), machinery & transport equipment (+10.5%) and mineral fuels (+9.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index increased 8.3%.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and export volume index increased 9.9% and 20.6% respectively.

 

Imports

In May 2017, the import unit value index decreased by 0.9% to 115.4 points which was attributed to mineral fuels (-2.0%), machinery & transport equipment (-0.8%) and manufactured goods (-0.5%). Meanwhile, the import volume index increased 14.3% to 145.6 points. This increase was led by chemicals (+23.5%) followed by mineral fuels (+22.7%) and food (+17.5%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index increased 11.2%.

On a-year-on-year basis, the import unit value index and import volume index increased 8.0% and 20.9% respectively.

 

Terms of trade

In May 2017, Malaysia’s terms of trade decreased by 0.3% to 97.5 points when compared with April 2017. Meanwhile, a rise of 1.7% was recorded year-on-year.
