Exports

On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, in April 2017, the export unit value index increased 0.3% to 113.8 points which was mainly attributed to mineral fuels (+2.4%), food (+1.4%) and chemicals (+1.0%). In contrast, the  export volume index decreased 10.7% to 122.1 points. This was contributed by inedible crude materials (-22.2%), mineral fuels (-16.3%) and chemicals (-11.5%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 5.4%.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and export volume index increased 11.0% and 8.6% respectively.

 

Imports

In April 2017, the import unit value index increased 0.2% to 116.4 points which was attributed to mineral fuels (+3.0%), chemicals (+0.5%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.3%). Meanwhile, the  import volume index decreased 15.7% to 127.3 points. This decrease was led by inedible crude materials (-22.1%) followed by machinery & transport equipment (-20.3%) and animal and vegetable oils and fats (-12.7%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the  import volume index dropped 13.2%.

On a year-on-year basis, the import unit value index and import volume index increased 9.7% and 13.8% respectively.

 

Terms of trade

In April 2017, Malaysia’s terms of trade rose marginally by 0.1% to 97.8 points when compared with March 2017. Meanwhile, a rise of 1.2% was recorded year-on-year.
