Exports
On a-month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, in February 2017, the export unit value index registered an increase of 1.1% to 113.3 points. This was mainly attributed to inedible crude materials (+5.3%), mineral fuels (+3.2%) and chemicals (+2.3%). Similarly, the export volume index also rose 1.0% to 119.0 points. This was led by chemicals (+14.0%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (+11.9%) and inedible crude materials (+7.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index expanded 11.7%.
When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and export volume index increased 8.7% and 16.5% respectively.
Imports
In February 2017, the import unit value index increased 0.5% to 115.7 points, month-on-month (m-o-m), which was led by inedible crude materials (+4.8%), manufactured goods (+1.4%) and chemicals (+0.8%). Meanwhile the import volume index decreased 4.2% to 123.9 points. This was mainly attributed to miscellaneous manufactured articles (-17.9%), machinery & transport equipment (-13.1%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (-9.6%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index increased 11.5%.
On a-year-on-year basis, the import unit value index and import volume index increased 7.3% and 19.1% respectively.
Terms of trade
In February 2017, Malaysia’s terms of trade increased 0.6% to 98.0 points when compared with January 2017. Meanwhile, a rise of 1.3% was recorded year-on-year.
