Overview

The Index of Distributive Trade expanded by  6.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2016 as compared with the same period in 2015. The growth was mainly supported by the Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade sub-sectors which increased by  8.9 per cent and  7.4 per cent respectively. The Motor Vehicles sub-sector declined to  -2.4 per cent.

The seasonally adjusted Index of Distributive Trade increased by  0.5 per cent as against the first quarter of 2016. The increase was backed by the Wholesale Trade  (2.1%) and Motor Vehicles  (0.4%) sub-sectors.

Performance of Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

The index of Wholesale Trade grew by  8.9 per cent in the second quarter 2016 over the second quarter 2015. The increase was led by Other Specialised Wholesale  (18.0%), Non-specialised Wholesale Trade  (6.9%) and Wholesale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco  (6.3%).

Performance of Retail Trade Sub-sector

In the second quarter of 2016, the Retail Trade sub-sector posted an increase of  7.4 per cent year-on-year. The growth was spurred by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores  (19.8%), Retail Sale of Information and Communications Equipment in Specialised Stores  (9.4%)  and Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets  (8.6%).

Performance of Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

The index of Motor Vehicles which includes Parts and Accessories declined to  -2.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2016 as compared to the same quarter of 2015. The decrease was due to the decline in Sale of Motor Vehicles  (-6.0%), Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motorcycles and Related Parts and Accessories  (-3.5%) and Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles  (-0.5%).
