Overview

The index of Distributive Trade in the first quarter of 2015 expanded by 8.8  per cent year-on-year, compared to 8.0 per cent registered in the previous quarter.  The growth was supported mainly by Retail Trade (10.7%), Wholesale Trade (7.9%) and Motor Vehicles (7.0%).

The seasonally adjusted index of Distributive Trade grew by 2.6 per cent as against the previous quarter.  The increase was recorded in Retail Trade (3.2%), Wholesale Trade (2.8%) and Motor Vehicles (0.9%) sub-sectors.

Performance of Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

The index of Wholesale Trade  increased by 7.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2015 as compared with the first quarter of 2014. The growth was contributed by Other Specialised Wholesale (11.8%), Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (10.1%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (9.0%).

Performance of Retail Trade Sub-sector

In the first quarter of 2015, the Retail Trade sub-sector accelerated by 10.7 per cent year-on-year. The increase was supported by Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (15.5%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (15.1%) and Retail Sale of Information and Communications Equipment in Specialised Stores (12.5%).

Performance of Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Year-on-year, the index of Motor Vehicles which includes Parts and Accessories rose by 7.0 per cent. The Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts and Accessories posted an increase of 9.6 per cent, Sale of Motor Vehicles, 7.3 per cent and Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles, 7.1 per cent which propelled the performance of Motor Vehicles sub-sector.
