WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE MALAYSIA SLIPS 0.9 PER CENT TO RECORD RM108.0 BILLION
IN FEBRUARY 2021

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales   value   of  Wholesale   &   Retail   Trade   recorded   RM108.0  billion   in   February  2021,  registering  -0.9   per  cent  contraction  year-on year. The contraction was due to Retail Trade which slipped  -2.1 per cent. Similarly,  Motor  Vehicles  and  Wholesale  Trade  also  decreased  -0.1 per cent respectively.

In  terms   of  volume  index,  Wholesale & Retail Trade  registered  a  growth  of   -1.1 per cent  year-on-year to record 126.5 points. The decline was due to the decrease of  -2.1 per cent and  -1.0 per cent in Retail Trade and Motor Vehicles respectively. Wholesale Trade also recorded a negative growth to register   0.1 per cent. As   for   seasonally   adjusted   volume   index,   it   expanded   4.0 per cent month-on-month in February 2021.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM52.6 billion in February 2021, a decrease of RM0.03 billion (-0.1%) as against February 2020. Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis recorded a fall of  -5.1 per cent, Other Specialised Wholesale  -4.3 per cent and Wholesale  of  Agricultural  Raw  Materials  &  Live  Animals  -2.0 per cent  as  compared  to  the  previous  year. For  monthly  comparison,  sales  of  this  sub-sector went down  5.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  124.7 points, contracted  0.1 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-5.8%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (-5.4%) and Other Specialised Wholesale (-4.6%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose  2.0 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  2.1 per cent as compared to February 2020. Among groups that contributed to this fall were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-15.7%), Retail  Sale  of  Other  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (-6.6%) and Retail  Sale  of  Cultural  &  Recreation  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (-3.2%). Compared  with  January  2021, sales  of  this  sub-sector  edged  down  3.0 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded  -2.1 per cent growth to 138.5 points as compared to February 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-14.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-7.0%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-4.5%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  2.0 per cent as against January 2021.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of negative  0.1 per cent. This  decrease  was  attributed  to  Maintenance  &  Repair  of  Motor  Vehicles  which  registered  a  growth of  -6.3 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories  -4.1 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased  3.2 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles declined  -1.0 per cent year-on-year to reach  98.2 points. The decrease was contributed by Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles  (-6.8%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (-4.7%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector surged  21.0 per cent month-on-month.
