Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance registered a growth of 0.4% in March 2016 to 116.8 points from 116.3 points in the previous month. The increase was supported by Number of Housing Units Approved (1.0%), Expected Sales Value in Manufacturing Sector (0.6%) and Number of New Companies Registered (0.3%). However, the annual change of LI continued to decrease in March 2016.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, decreased 0.5% in the reference month. Three components that caused the decline were Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing Sector (-0.5%), Total Employment in Manufacturing Sector (-0.3%) and Industrial Production Index (-0.1%). The annual change of CI posted a growth of 1.1% as against 2.0% in the preceding month.

The annual change of CI remained positive in March 2016. Meanwhile, the LI recorded a lower annual change as compared to the previous month. Concurrently, the Diffusion Indexes for LI and CI remained above 50.0%. This implies that the Malaysian economy will continue to expand at a slower rate in the months ahead.
