Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance augmented by 0.2% to 118.2 points in January 2016 compared to 118.0 points in the previous month. This was induced by Real Imports of Semi Conductors (0.5%), Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index and Number of New Companies Registered which posted 0.3% respectively. The annual change of LI remained negative in the reference month. However, it showed an improvement as compared to the previous month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, increased further by 1.0% in January 2016 from 0.1% in the preceding month. The increase was mainly driven by Capacity Utilisation in Manufacturing Sector (0.7%), Real Contributions to EPF (0.6%) and Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing Sector (0.3%). The annual change of CI rose to 1.5% as against 1.3% in December 2015.

The annual change of LI and CI showed an improvement in January 2016 as compared to the   previous month. Concurrently, the Diffusion Index for CI reached 100.0%, while LI below 50.0%. This indicates that the economic growth will remain positive at a slower rate in the coming months.
